I did attend the annual Marimekko event at Esplanadi Park in Helsinki. Apparently somebody else did also.
I think this pic shows the main problem with the Marimekko brand on the Finnish market. A vast majority of people watching the show did not fit the picture of a design house.
Those interested in the brand are aging, do not carry the brand and do definitely not represent the audience Mr. Mika Ihamuotila, CEO and majority owner, desires to see as the audience of a new Finnish design brand, Marimekko. Because it’s here Mr. Ihamuotila wants Marimekko to be. A design brand.
There might be some steps left to be taken. “Those who know” know that Mr. Ihamuotila has succeeded in luring a female key player from H&M. If this is true, it is a giant leap towards the goal. Marimekko – a design brand.

På pricken! These guys have certainly thought up an idea which is very much up-to-date. Hopefully they have enough funds to get the idea up n’ running as a business. I wish them good luck. Another Commune.

Not only developers world wide are fighting for the attention of Steve Jobs to get their app’s in the App Store. Also media companies are knocking on the door. Swedish public service broadcaster, SVT, is being pretty smart. They wrote Mr. Jobs a personal letter and put it up here. Interesting.

Swedish digital design agencies are in the forefront in creating own IP:s. Great Works is one of these agencies and Collected is their latest IP. It’s about giving you one single place where you can gather all your Tweets, blogs, RSS’s, YouTubes and alike.
Nice idea and nice design, too. Acneish, if you like. Great Works did this in collaboration with Geekboys.

“Making money is primitive, it’s a lot more demanding to design and craft a piece of furniture” is a quote of carpenter and furniture designer Mr. Kari Virtanen, winner of Pro Finlandia medal in 2009.
An akward transition to brand design and the ongoing debate on whether the brand is more important in consumer markets than in b-to-b. Drop Social Media for a second and lay back for some old school – concentrate on the basics.
Mr. Mats Rönne, former Vice president of Brand Management and European Media Director at Electrolux keeps things simple-stupid in his article about the importance of the brand in the “respective markets”. Mr. Rönne compares toothpaste to IT-solutions.

Sony has left advertising agency Fallon in favor for Anomaly, an strategy and digital communications agency, as their partner in coping with the business of the 21st century.
This is quite interesting since Sony Bravia TV-ads by Fallon were the guide for everybody inside and outside the community in what direction to move with your communications.
Perhaps this move is just a sign of the times or, even more threatening, a signal of old marketing models not working well enough in the new (business) environment. Let’s wait for comments from the Mad Men.
Here on Brand Republic.

Some the brightest brains in business of the 21st century claim that the headline should be taken seriously. The same people also claim that there’s already strong signals out there where businesses have designed Social Media as a driving vehicle in their commercialization efforts.
Here (a bit slow connection) you’ll find out why Mozilla, Anomaly and Thrillist find it more valuable to skip advertising. We just might have a start to something interesting here…
